Auxin Specific Applicator Training

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will conduct a series of Auxin Trainings for producers in the Wharton County area from February – March 2022.  This special training that has been required annually for the past three years is for the new dicamba and 2,4-D  formulations applied on tolerant cotton and soybean crops.  The 1 hour training will educate applicators on the requirements and practices for keeping these auxin herbicides on-target, and will satisfy the updated auxin herbicide specific training requirements.

Again in 2022, dicamba technology herbicide applications will be limited to certified applicators only.

In contrast to the dicamba technology products, the Enlist products can be sold to and used by certified applicators or those working under the supervision of a certified applicator.

The training is not required for those using range and pasture labeled dicamba and/or 2,4-D products.  The Auxin Specific Herbicide training is an annual training.  Completion of the annual Auxin training is not required to purchase seed or chemistry, it is only required annually, prior to applying Engenia®, Xtendimax®, Fexapan®, Tavium®,EnlistOne® and/or EnlistDuo®  herbicides.

 

Each program will be one hour long and will provide one (1) Texas Department of Agriculture laws and regulations continuing education unit (CEU) and will meet the annual Auxin training requirement for 2022.  An applicator or operator must attend only one of these available trainings in 2020.  We recently reached 131 pesticide applicators at the Feed Grain and Cotton Conference with the required Auxin training, however, there will be more cotton and soybean producers who will need to complete this annual training.  Therefore, we’re providing these six trainings through March 23rd.  We’ll continue to provide these trainings through the growing season as needed .  A flyer for this series of Auxin Trainings can be found at https://wharton.agrilife.org  For any questions regarding the Auxin trainings, contact Corrie Bowen at 979-532-3310.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension in Wharton, Matagorda, Jackson, and Colorado Counties are happy to announce the Upper Gulf Coast Feed Grain and Cotton Conference for Tuesday, January 25, 2022.   This year’s conference will be held in Crescent Hall at the Wharton County Fairgrounds at 6036 FM 961 Road Wharton, Texas 77488.  Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with our first speaker beginning at 8:30 a.m.  The conference will include a catered lunch meal will conclude at 1:45 p.m.  3 CEUs will be awarded to pesticide license holders with the Texas Department of Agriculture (2 IPM, 1 L&R); and 4.5 CEUs for Certified Crop Advisors have been applied for.  Thanks to ag industry sponsors, no registration fee will be charged.   

 

The Feed Grain and Cotton conference will address the following topics: Bollworm Update - David Kerns, Texas IPM Coordinator; Cover Crops - Dr. Jake Mowrer, Extension Soil Specialist; Herbicide Selection - Dr. Josh McGinty, Assistant Professor and Extension Agronomist;  2022 Texas Auxin Herbicide Training Dicamba and Enlist Technologies - Dr. Scott Nolte, Extension Weed Specialist;Timing of Fungicide Applications in Corn -Tom Isakeit, Extension Plant Pathologist; Cotton Market Update – John Robinson, Extension Cotton Marketing Specialist; RACE Trial Update/Current Cotton Research – Dr. Ben McKnight, Extension Cotton Specialist; and Fertilizer Market and Supply – Toby Hlavinka, American Plant Food.  

 

The annual Auxin training will be a one-hour training for 2022.  The Auxin training that is provided as part of the Feed Grain and Cotton Conference will fulfill the annual auxin training requirements for Dicamba and 2,4-D Choline products and will include 1 hours of Laws and Regulations CEUs.

We have several meetings coming up. The Western Rice Belt Production Conference and Upper Gulf Coast Grain Handlers Conference are going on Wednesday and Thursday this week at the El Campo Civic Center. We are harvesting cotton, and I am happy to see module trucks rolling and gins running.

The 6 and 11 days after treatment (DAT) ratings for the cotton harvest aid study for Wharton, Texas are below. The initial treatment was made on August 20, and the second on September 2, 2021. The cotton harvest aid study for this site was conducted on a field of Phytogen 332 planted on March 21, 2021. I've included the 6 days after treatment (DAT) ratings for the cotton harvest aid study that was treated on August 20, 2021 in Wharton, Texas. The test plot is located at (29.292813, -96.168313), off CR 961 near the Wharton fairgrounds, if you would like to stop by. Ratings for 6 DAT were taken on August 26, 2021, prior to the second treatment. Ratings will be taken again at 12 days after the initial treatment. The cotton harvest aid study for this site was conducted on a field of Phytogen 332 W3FE. Defoliation

Howdy,

Our season is rapidly wrapping up, most of the grain is out of the field, and I've seen some soybeans harvested. We've started defoliating and picking cotton as well.

Defoliation is usually recommended at over 60% open bolls, or 4 nodes above cracked boll. We have a defoliation trial set up this year, I will add the results for that test next week.
